Dave
Barry Slept Here: A Sort of History of the United States (1989)
- In this book, Dave applies his own unique humor to the parody-textbook
style mined a generation ago by Richard Armour. This book seems to
draw a lot of inspiration from Armour, even to the fake "discussion
questions" at the end of each chapter. The book is a blow-by-blow
account of American History, skipping the dull parts and making the
dates easy to remember (they're all October 8). It holds to the same
scrupulous standard of accuracy as Dave's other books; for example,
we learn that the little girl who suggested that Abraham Lincoln grow
a beard later suggested that he wear mascara, rouge and a simple string
of pearls. "Fortunately," continues Dave, "just then the Civil War
broke out." The book also contains considerable mention of THE HAWLEY-SMOOT
TARIFF not because Dave has anything to say about it, but just because
he likes the way THE HAWLEY-SMOOT TARIFF looks in big bold
letters. This is among Dave's best work, and leaves the reader wanting
more. Highly recommended. (John
I. Carney)

Dave
Barry's Book of Bad Songs (1997) - Like other consumer products, Dave
Barry's books just keep getting smaller and smaller. (See "Consumers
from Mars," Dave Barry is Not Making This Up.) This latest is less
than 100 pages, with about 12 words on each page, and what's more,
they're mostly words we've already read either in his column or in
Dave Barry is Not Making This Up. But - and this is the important
part - IT DOESN'T MATTER. Dave Barry's Book of Bad Songs is still
cause for convulsions and excessive salivation. I have no doubt that
Mr. Barry will someday haved honed his craft to the point he will
be able to cause major bodily disruptions with a mere syllable, molecule
or quark, which will be the funniest quark in the world and we will
rush out to buy it for $20,000 and feel well rewarded. In the meantime,
buy this book. And thank you, Mr. Barry, for the "chapter"
Songs Women Really Hate. (Leah
